Rugger Ramble


 The Rugger Ramble is a 13 mile Challenge Walk which starts and finishes at Wharfedale Rugby Club, Wharfeside Avenue, Threshfield BD23 5BS and follows well established footpaths including The Dalesway. The walk starts at 9.00am and you can walk independently or as part of a group guided by a walk leader. Directions and grid references are detailed below and those walking independently must have map reading experience and carry the appropriate map. A team of Sweepers will walk the route to ensure that everyone has returned safely to the Clubhouse. Checkpoints will close only when the Sweepers have passed through. Please note the Sweeper's responsibility is to check the route only - not diversions from the route such as those into local hostelries! Please ensure you read and understand the Rules of Entry which are detailed on the main Rugger Ramble page

Refreshments - Tea and biscuits are available at the start and water will be provided at all manned checkpoints. Food will be available at the finish.

Clubhouse Facilities - Ladies and Gentlemen's  changing rooms available with showers, please bring your own towels. There is a lounge and dining area, food and full bar facilities will operate throughout the day.

Awards - Everyone completing the walk within the time limit will receive an event T shirt, a "Goodie Bag" and a commemorative certificate

Route - START: Wharfedale RUFC :  GR 990643 - Leave the Clubhouse via Wharfeside Avenue towards Grassington, cross over River Wharfe Bridge to: GR 998639

Follow footpath to Grass Wood Lane, cross road and follow lane up to Town Head Farm. Turn right to follow diverted route of Dalesway (signposted) around Townhead Farm; continue along Dalesway to Scott Gate Lane: CHECKPOINT GR 992682 (Water available)

Bear left and follow Scott Gate Lane downhill into Conistone village; follow unclassified road over Conistone Bridge to it's junction with the B6160 opposite Kilnsey Village Hall: GR 976675

Turn left along the B6160 (marshals will be in attendance to assist with road safety) turn right after approximately 60 yards near Bow Bridge, along a farm track; follow the finger posted sign over a stone footbridge to it's junction with Mastiles Lane: GR 968673 (Care should be taken on the loose and uneven surface of the farm track and Mastiles Lane)

Climb Mastiles Lane to it's highest point and continue downhill through Mastiles Gate:  GR 944662 

Continue along Mastiles Lane to pointer sign: CHECKPOINT GR 935657 turn left, following the footpath marked with flags to Bordley Green Farm: CHECKPOINT GR 943650(Water available)

Follow the footpath towards Higher Heights Holes, turn right onto bridle path to: UNMANNED CHECKPOINT GR 958646.

Cross Boss Moor to gateway and: UNMANNED CHECKPOINT GR 957633. Pass through the gateway, turn left and follow footpath across the moor and via Lane House to Skirethorns Lane to B6160: GR 989638

Cross the main road and follow the lane which leads past some agricultural buildings to Wharfeside Avenue and return to the Clubhouse. FINISH

PLEASE REMEMBER - the route follows well established signposted footpaths and tracks. Diversion from the route will lead to disqualification.

RULES of ENTRY 1.  The routes are defined by directions and grid references which are listed above. Marker flags will be placed in locations where the organisers feel the route may be less distinct on the ground than ideal.

2.  There are 5 Checkpoints on the 13 mile route which must be visited in the correct order within  six(6) hours . The last two checkpoints are unmanned but an electronic timing box will be located for competitors to dip their cards.

3.  Entrants to the  walk can walk independently or a part of a group which will be guided by an experienced Walk Leader.  Those walking independently must have adequate walking experience and map reading ability to enable them to follow the route.  Less experienced walkers must join the group led by the Walk Leader for their own safety.

4.  All walkers must carry or wear: waterproof cagoule and over trousers, suitable sturdy footwear and sufficient food and drink for the day.  Those who are walking independently must also carry OS Outdoor Leisure Map Number 2, compass, whistle and survival bag.

5.  Walkers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times.

6.  No dogs are permitted on the walk, without exception. This is for your safety and that of other competitors and failure to comply will lead to disqualification

7.  Walkers must only withdraw at a controlled checkpoint and hand in their Si-Card to the checkpoint steward.
